The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Claims Unilever Prevented Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
One of the original creators behind the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he will personally create the controversial product as part of a personal series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders versus Parent Company
This latest announcement deepens the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized dessert company and Unilever, the British packaged goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders maintain how the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Flavor as a Symbol for Support
The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its coloration, that match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which was first created in 2016 to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes and Future Plans
Mr. Cohen stated how he will develop other ice cream flavors focusing on issues that the company was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, following decades with the organization, citing worries that its independence was compromised after corporate moves to curb its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
