The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
