The star has given the entirety of his £25k award prize money to the MVT, which operates to protect the United Kingdom's small concert spaces.

The star was given the award on October 16 as his new release the album was declared the best record of the last 12 months.

He has opted to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role small stages fulfilled in his initial steps.

"I would not have achieved my current career if it hadn't been for all the shows I performed around the area, and beyond, when I was beginning," said Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these locations have shut down – about one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, top acts such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which supports local stages.

Fender also participated, raising over £100k on his live tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money supported locations that were facing imminent closure due to challenges caused by flooding, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Other venues obtained monetary aid in upgrading infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted artists and fans.

"The concept that funds from performances in big venues backs the independent spots, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has said.

Fender is far from the only musician to donate his Mercury Prize prize money to worthy causes.

Back when they received the trophy in the mid-90s for their record Different Class, vocalist Jarvis Cocker stated that the group would give their prize money to the organization the charity.

During 2002, rapper and singer she divided her award among several organizations, including the children's charity and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I contributed a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," Ms Dynamite shared with outlets.

In recent years, the band donated their winnings to the local youth club that developed their band, as well as other independent music bodies.

Additionally winners that year M People donated their award to a MS organization after a acquaintance was diagnosed the condition.

"Winning was sufficient," said vocalist Heather Small. "The money was the bonus but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the cake. So our success touched another person's life."

Recently, the trust revealed it had saved a couple of local spots in that region, by bringing them into local control.

One venue in Southampton and The Croft in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is funded by a national body and supporters who acquire "ownership units" in the properties.
