Red Cross Accompanies Hamas in Recovery for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

A Red Cross official confirmed that its representatives accompanied members of Hamas into areas of the Gaza Strip currently controlled by IDF control to facilitate the search for the remains of individuals held captive.

Truce Agreements and Hostage Bodies Return

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on October 10, Hamas is required to return the remains of all captives promptly. In exchange, Israel has agreed to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies for every Israeli body returned.

Hamas has to date handed back the remains of 15 of those taken hostage but zero in the last five days, as some of those bodies are believed to be in areas beyond the yellow line marking the temporary truce line.

Red Cross Involvement as Neutral Intermediary

“Upon the appeal of the involved sides, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a party to the conflict as the group looked for the bodies of the deceased individuals past the military-established ‘yellow line’,” said a representative for the committee.

She continued: “The parties to the conflict determined the procedures of the operation and entrusted the Red Cross to serve as a neutral intermediary. The ICRC was not involved in the discussions.”

She further explained: “Our team was not involved in the search for the deceased nor does it take part in the retrieval of human remains.”

US Ultimatum and Regional Recovery Operations

Recently, the US president delivered a two-day ultimatum to the militant group. “Hamas is going to have to start handing over the remains of the deceased hostages, including two Americans, promptly, or the additional nations participating in this significant truce will take action,” he wrote on his online channel.

When the 48-hour deadline approached, the group, joined by the ICRC, joined teams from Egypt, who were granted permission by Israel to search for remains beyond the line marking the withdrawal of troops inside Gaza. An Israeli spokesperson said the Egyptian team would use heavy machinery and vehicles in the operation.

Official Verification and Media Coverage

The news was corroborated by an source within Israel, who told local press that Hamas representatives had been allowed to access sections of Gaza under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to look for the bodies of hostages, alongside Egypt’s and ICRC personnel.

Footage published by a media outlet appeared to show members of a Hamas unit – part of the organization’s armed faction responsible for holding hostages – accompanying a Red Cross vehicle in a specific location close to a southern city, which is beyond Israeli military control.

Difficulties in Locating Hostage Remains

The search for the bodies of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most sensitive matters in the ceasefire agreed between the parties. However, the attempt to find the bodies has been difficult from the outset, given the presence of an approximate enormous amount of rubble across the territory, where, as per local health authorities, at least 10,000 Palestinians are recorded as unaccounted for, trapped under the rubble.

Conflicting Claims on Remains Whereabouts

The group has claimed it does not know the precise whereabouts of all the remains, saying it has been unable to communicate with several of its units that had been holding the hostages and were allegedly killed during Israeli bombardments.

However, an official representative claimed that the organization was aware of the whereabouts of the remains. “If Hamas exerted greater effort, they would be able to recover the remains of our hostages,” the spokesperson said.

US Stance and Disarmament Talks

While the US president has acknowledged that some of the remains are hard to reach, he said that “the rest they can hand over immediately and, for unknown reasons, they are not.”
