Forecasters are reporting an icy commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Plans Go Ahead Amid Warnings

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are set to take place, unlike last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," noted the Met Office.

Fireworks Under Open but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and good visibility. Temperatures are expected to be cold, meaning warm wraps a necessity, according to forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• The public are advised to plan for delays for journeys on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are expected on trains and buses.

Readings Set to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Alerts Released

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this meant the weather was expected to trigger significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in security, wrapping up warm is completely key.
