Armed assailants have killed a teacher and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, according to police.

The criminal group stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on Monday, police confirmed.

The attackers "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their hostel, an official report indicated.

One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.

Local residents informed journalists that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.

The police said they had deployed "extra specialized police forces, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.
