Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these medications should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
