Keeper Mary Earps has emphatically said that her newly released memoir was not designed to “tear anyone down” and expressed concern that audience feedback has been “distorted.”

Disputed Remarks and Public Criticism

The former England goalkeeper, who was instrumental in the Euro 2022 victory, received criticism from fans and Blues coach Sonia Bompastor after commenting about ex-colleague Hannah Hampton and coach Sarina Wiegman.

In her book, Earps allegedly stated told Wiegman she was “supporting poor attitude” by reinstating Hampton to the England squad after dropping her for being “disruptive and unreliable.”

“I’ve found it quite intense to see how certain aspects were twisted,” Earps stated publicly.

Defending Her Intentions

Earps strongly emphasized that the autobiography was not designed to harm individuals.

• “My memoir wasn’t created to criticize others in any shape or form.”
• “That is not who I am as a individual.”
• “This is real life. It has implications. It isn’t a drama.”

She also commented on how women’s football has evolved into a realm that has become “somewhat similar to show business,” where private matters are scrutinized heavily for people’s enjoyment.

Connection to the Coach

Earps discussed being replaced as the starting goalkeeper before the European Championship and how that affected their dynamic with Wiegman.

She stated it was “not a sudden deterioration” in their relationship—just a difference of perspectives—and she still respects the head coach.

“There were things that took place at that time that I wish had happened differently,” Earps remarked.

Personal Struggles

In her book, Earps shared details of the bullying she suffered at during her education, describing it as a “particularly challenging” part to read again because it revived previous trauma.

• “I just assumed that people didn’t like me for the majority of my years.”
• “I was trained to feel like no one truly cared.”

These feelings led to anxiety episodes, and Earps disclosed she faced challenges with physical appearance and used alcohol during the Covid pandemic to handle mental health struggles.

Relationships and Goals

Earps openly discussed that she is in a partnership with Kitty and stated she is proud about her partnership.

She also talked about her hopes for motherhood and revealed she has undergone egg freezing for future use.

“I deeply desire to be a parent and have a family,” Earps said. “I am passionate about soccer, but I wish to have a child at a later stage.”

Earps described the egg-freezing procedure as “overwhelming and personal” and pushed for more studies tailored to sports professionals undergoing similar procedures.

In her statements, Earps emphasized that she has no regrets about her professional journey or personal choices, stressing that she always acted with integrity.
