F1 has unveiled the simplified vocabulary that will be used to describe the intricate details of its upcoming 2026 regulations.
The sport is implementing what is considered the biggest technical shift in its long history for the 2026 campaign, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the required adoption of fully sustainable fuels.
The revised engines, which retain the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a greatly enhanced electrical capacity, necessitating key advancements in the aero packages.
During grand prix events, competitors will tactically deploy ERS energy – potentially on qualifying laps – to secure the peak result.
Broad surveys were conducted with a wide range of fans, including new, casual and core fans, to understand which terms would aid comprehension of the main elements of the upcoming rules.
The key objective was to render a range of advanced technical aspects of the racing as accessible as possible for the widest audience.
Consequently, older technical labels for some systems – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the adjustable aero – have been phased out in favour of straightforward terms that succinctly convey the actual function of the system.
What's the New Technology?
The FIA states that drivers will have greater control to determine tactics regarding power usage, energy recovery, and saving energy.
The 2026 rules mandate a series of modes that will be clearly indicated on television graphics to aid the audience's understanding of the on-track action.
- Passing Mode: This takes over from the current DRS. It provides a short boost of battery power deployable when a driver is close behind the leading car to assist with an overtake.
- Power Mode: This is a manual power boost from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during attack or defence. It provides the driver maximum power at the click of a switch.
Both of these strategic tools will have to be deployed strategically, as the available electrical charge is strictly limited.
- Adjustable Aero: Both the front and rear wings change configuration – flattening on the high-speed sections for reduced drag and higher speed, and angling down in the corners for peak grip.
- Recharge: Drivers can recharge the energy store with energy harvested under braking, or during coasting at the conclusion of a straight or in corners where only limited engine output is used.
2026 Car Specifications
The 2026 cars will be smaller and lighter than this year, with a car length reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight decreased by 30kg.
Overall downforce is expected to drop by approximately a significant margin, although squads will inevitably claw this back as they develop their cars.
Air resistance has been slashed by 40%. The cars will utilize moveable wing elements – both wings will move on the straights to reduce drag and boost top speed and revert into place for peak handling.
Wheels will retain the current rim size, but the actual tyres will be reduced in width, by 25mm at the front and 30mm at the rear.
What's Changing in the Engines?
The new power units will have an near-equal balance in energy output by the ICE and the battery and motor, increasing from about 20% electrical under present rules.
The hybrid system is simplified through the deletion of the MGU-H, the sophisticated and pricey component that harvested power from the exhaust turbo.
Cars will be obliged to compete on carbon-neutral fuel, manufactured from organic sources or synthetic industrial processes.
